Their flexible and stretchable shell allows for greater packing flexibility, and additional front pockets provide easy access to essentials without opening the entire suitcase.
However, soft-shell suitcases also have drawbacks: They offer less protection for fragile items, so extra care is needed when packing. Additionally, they are not waterproof, meaning the fabric can absorb moisture in rainy conditions.
Soft-shell suitcases usually only have one large main compartment, which offers a lot of storage space for luggage. Small items or travel essentials can be easily stored in the front pockets.

As an older female travelling alone on public transport – and often over longer distances – suitcase weight is very important. It’s impossible to avoid steps 100% of the time, especially if lifts or escalators are out of action.
I prefer soft-sided cases, as I don’t carry fragile items and, although I travel pretty light, I often need extra room for purchases made while away. I haven’t used four-wheeled luggage before, but I think two wheels work better for me on uneven surfaces, within narrow train aisles, etc.
It looks like the Samsonite Base Boost is one for me to look at, as I need to get a new suitcase for my trips, which are generally 5–8 days long. Many thanks for your reviews.
